Human Formation for International Students

THE HDGS INTELLECTUAL FORMATION FRAMEWORK
Fifty structured reflection modules. Weekly facilitated sessions. Quarterly
reviews. 1-on-1 life direction. Designed for Vietnamese students navigating the
most formative years of their lives.
Formation has two dimensions: the external environment — the structure, the relationships,
the phases of development that HDGS constructs around the student — and the internal
work — the deliberate, structured examination of who the student is, what they are
becoming, and where their life is pointing. Inward Journey™ is the framework for that
internal work.
THE FRAMEWORK

Self-help programs provide motivation and techniques. Inward
Journey™ provides structure and depth. It does not ask the student to
feel more positive or work harder. It asks the student to think
more clearly about who they are, what they are experiencing, and where
they are going — with a structured framework that makes that
thinking rigorous rather than circular.

Therapy addresses psychological difficulty. Inward Journey™
addresses formation questions — the philosophical and personal
questions that every serious young person carries but few have a
structure for examining. Who am I becoming? What do I actually
value? What kind of person do I want to be? These are not
clinical questions. They are formation questions.

Courses transmit information. Inward Journey™ facilitates
development. The difference is in the relational structure: weekly
group discussions, quarterly individual reviews, and 1-on-1 sessions
that keep the student in a genuine accompaniment relationship
throughout the program.

Inward Journey™ is a proprietary intellectual formation framework — specifically designed for Vietnamese students in the middle of a significant life transition. Structured around 50 reflection modules in six thematic tracks, each anchored by a carefully selected text chosen for its relevance to the specific formation challenges Vietnamese students face.
ACCESS PATHS
Inward Journey™ is available through two distinct access paths, designed to serve
different family situations.
LANE A — INTEGRATED
If your child is enrolled in the HDGS Formation Environment in the United States, Inward Journey™ is included. It is not an add-on. It is the intellectual backbone of the formation architecture — present in every phase, deepening the meaning of every formation experience.
Lane A students access the full portal, all 50 modules, all weekly sessions, and all quarterly reviews as part of their formation enrollment.
Included in all HDGS Formation Environment enrollments
LANE B — STANDALONE
Inward Journey™ Standalone is available to Vietnamese students and families anywhere in the world — delivered entirely digitally through the CỔNG HÀNH TRÌNH NỘI TÂM portal. It serves:
Vietnamese students preparing to enter the US (pre-arrival formation foundation)
Vietnamese students currently in the US without full Lane A enrollment
Vietnamese students and young adults globally in significant life transitions
HDGS alumni who want continued formation access
Vietnamese families who want the framework for a family member not in the US
THE PROGRAM

Every Inward Journey™ begins with orientation — not to logistics, but to the framework itself. Module 0 introduces the philosophy behind structured reflection, establishes the student's baseline formation position, and prepares them to engage with the six module tracks that follow.

Each of the six formation tracks is anchored by a foundational text. Each module includes assigned reading, 8–9 structured reflection questions, a founder video introduction (15–20 min), a downloadable reflection worksheet, and a live facilitated discussion session.

Across the six book modules, 50 individual reflection frameworks guide the student through a complete arc of intellectual formation. Each framework is a deliberate sequence of questions designed to produce specific clarity on a specific formation dimension — organized to build progressively across the program.

Once per week, participants gather in a facilitated group Zoom session (60–90 minutes). The session is structured: a formation question from the current module, facilitated reflection sharing, and discussion. Sessions are recorded for same-week asynchronous access.

Every quarter, each student meets individually with a HDGS formation guide (45 minutes) for a structured review of their formation progress. What has been accomplished? What is emerging? What is the forward direction for the next quarter?

Beyond quarterly reviews, Inward Journey™ includes individual life direction sessions — structured conversations focused on the specific formation questions the student is carrying. These are formation accompaniment: the guide fully present to the student's development at a specific moment.

Cổng Hành Trình Nội Tâm means, in Vietnamese, "The Gate of the Inward Journey." It is
the name of the HDGS digital portal through which all Inward Journey™ content is
delivered.

Same-week access to all recorded group sessions, so no session is ever missed.

A private record of every module completed and every reflection submitted — yours throughout the program.

SIX MODULE TRACKS
Six thematic tracks, each addressing a distinct dimension of formation, organized in a
developmental sequence from identity to integration.
01
Who are you, and where do you belong? This module addresses the identity questions that Vietnamese students carry most acutely in the first period of study abroad — the tension between remaining Vietnamese and adapting globally, between collective identity and individual selfhood.
02
What does it mean to navigate a culture that is not your own — without losing the culture that is? Module 2 provides a philosophical framework for the cultural decoding work that happens in the formation environment. Surface adaptation is not enough.
03
What is emotional intelligence, and why does it matter more than any single academic skill? This module addresses the development of emotional awareness, regulation, and expression — building the Emotional Maturity pillar through structured intellectual engagement.
04
How do human beings communicate — and what gets in the way? Module 4 moves beyond language into the deeper dimensions: listening, conflict, vulnerability, and the relational skills that determine the quality of every relationship the student will have.
05
What is your life for? The most philosophically ambitious track in Inward Journey™ — a structured examination of purpose, values, and life direction. It does not impose answers. It builds the frameworks for finding them.
06
What have you become? The integration track — designed for the final phase of the formation period. It consolidates the development of the previous five modules, articulates what has been built, and points toward the forward arc of the student's life.
FOR PARENTS
Vietnamese parents sometimes wonder whether Inward Journey™ means their child will be
spending less time on academics and more time on "thinking about themselves." This is a
reasonable question with a clear answer: Inward Journey™ is not a distraction from academic
performance. It is the intellectual infrastructure that makes academic performance sustainable.

Each of the 50 modules is a deliberate
sequence of formation questions —
rigorous, intellectually demanding, and designed to produce specific developmental outcomes.

Formation progress is reported to parents through the Family Bridge — quarterly updates that give families genuine visibility into their child's development, not just their GPA.

Fifty structured reflection modules across six thematic tracks — a complete intellectual formation curriculum, not an open-ended program that varies by facilitator or session.

Inward Journey™ addresses the philosophical and personal questions every serious student carries. It is not clinical intervention — it is formation accompaniment.
